Dolls and monsters

August 16, 2012

You may have noticed a bright blob in the background of my videos — this guy:

I made him a few years ago, pretty much making it up as I went along. I knitted a square, and then picked up stitches all around and made a body with some shaping. The feet (notice the little claws?) are crocheted. It was going to have arms, I didn’t get around to it, and then I kind of liked it just like this. I made a smaller orange monster, with arms and features and hair, for a friend’s kid who apparently loved it. (I have a picture of it snuggled in his bed with some stuffed penguins. Aw.)

I also used to crochet a lot of free-form toys and monsters a while back, and decided one day to make some dolls. I think the skinhead came first, and then the 50’s girl doll. (She has a ponytail with a pink bow on it, which you can’t quite see.) I did have the idea to make a whole set of subculture dolls, but working in teeny tiny details — like, say, thumbs and ears — was making my hands hurt and then I just never got around to it. I could pick it back up, but I don’t think I have any of the skin-tone yarn left. Maybe an excursion is in order…

I love the ruffled skirt on the 50s doll! So cute!
